Sixteen
After they finished their meal, Hatch spent a great deal of time detailing her idea on how to raid Dakaraiâs compound. It seemed she had won the groupâs support, including Jabariâs.
"When are we making the raid?" Hatch asked.
"Not so fast, Hatch." Jabari said. "You proved yourself to be worthy in the ring with Duke. We were all impressed by that."
Duke nodded his agreement and broke into the wide grin sheâd become familiar with in the short time they've spent together.
Jabari continued, "But you must understand something, to truly be testedâto truly earn this group's trust, you must come out with us on a raid. There is no better way to determine a soldierâs worth than when you stand side-by-side with them against the enemy.â
Hatch understood what he said. She knew it better than most. She knew there was a disparity that occurred between training and the real world. The ability to handle oneself in a controlled training environment, even if it was intense and dangerous, could still be totally different in the way one handled themselves on the battlefield. She'd seen soldiers who could post record setting times on obstacle courses and live fire drills be unable to perform in combat. Hatch had seen some soldiers whoâd proven themselves in training fall short in their ability to carry through on the actual battlefield when the bullets started flying and IEDs were exploding around them.
Hatch herself would forever be haunted by the moment of hesitation which cost one of her best friendâs life. It was etched in her memory forever and something she punished herself for daily. So, she understood Jabari's need to test her in the field before any major operation. She just didn't know what that field test would be.
"I understand, Jabari. What do you have in mind?" she asked.
âOne of my sources has given us intel that there is a cache of medical supplies and food reserves. These items were stolen by Dakaraiâs men while on the way to support one of the villages in need. I know the location where they are being kept. I would like to get those supplies and bring them back to the village they were intended for, the one your priest friend has been helping. They're in dire need of medical attention and the hospitals can only do so much. The minor wounds can become terribly infected, and those people will need the medication. And plus, with all the damage to their village, the ability to provide for their families and the young children will be limited, and so I'd like to bring them food. But it will be risky, Miss Hatch. Extremely dangerous stuff. Even on smaller missions, we have lost many of our good men. I want you to understand what's at stake. By agreeing to come with us, you are putting your life in great danger. And I will think no less of you if you decide to back out now," he said.
Hatch didn't take offense at Jabariâs warning.
